ou might think a team with both “spring” and “lake” in its name would have an advantage in a game played on a wet field in a driving rain, but East Grand Rapids defeated Spring Lake 24-4 Monday evening at Memorial Field.
The game was the playoff opener for the Pioneers, who had a first-round bye while Spring Lake defeated Northview 21-5 in the first round. East got off to a quick start against the Lakers, scoring seven goals in the first few minutes of the game before Spring Lake even had an extended possession of the ball. As usual, Audrey Whiteside and Mary Schumar led the way, each scoring several goals in the first half on the way to an 18-2 lead at intermission.
With a running clock and wholesale substitutions, the Pioneers outscore the Lakers 6-2 in the second half to account for the final 20-goal margin.
Whiteside scored six goals in the game for the Pioneers while Schumar added four. Lily Montague had a hat trick for East and Blaise Gourley and Grace Griemsman each added two. Emily Bergstrom, Aneesa Berner, Sophie Dozeman, Sophie Forstner, Blaise Gourley, Bella Poortenga, and Anna VanderLaan each added single goals for East.
Lily Kate Rogers earned the victory in goal for the Pioneers, with Hannah McVicar relieving her in the second half.
Next up for East is the regional semifinal May 30 at 5:30 in Caledonia.
