East Grand Rapids defeated Big Rapids 6-4 in the Battle of the Rapids Thursday night at Ferris State’s Ewigleben Arena.
Alex DelVecchio got East on the board first, scoring from Nick Milanowski and Danny Muth. After Big Rapids tied the score, Muth scored on a shot from the point, assisted by Nate Milanowski and Robbie Stuursma. Cooper Bell extended the lead to 3-1 when he blocked a shot in his own zone, skated the puck in on a breakaway, and beat the Cardinals’ goalie with a laser to the stick side.
In the second period, Big Rapids cut the lead to 3-2 before East captain score an unassisted goal to put the Pioneers up by two. Forstner knocked down a loose puck with his hand and shot the puck into the top corner of the net. One official originally ruled the puck hadn’t gone in the net, but after a brief conference with his partners, he determined it was a goal.
Big Rapids drew within a goal again when the Cardinals scored a power play goal, but Colin Stecco scored on a breakaway set up by Jake Stewart to give East a 5-3 lead heading into the third period.
After the intermission, Big Rapids again cut the lead to one before Jack Miller put the game away when he scored on a rebound in the closing minutes. Muth also assisted on Miller’s goal, giving him one goal and two assists on the night. Tate Potteiger earned the victory in goal for the Pioneers.
