Game Recap

The last time East Grand Rapids had an undefeated regular season, this year’s senior class of Pioneers was in the fifth grade. Even then, though, there were people around the program who knew this day was coming.

The year was 2010 and East Grand Rapids was in the midst of their glory years of dominating opponents and winning state championships. This year’s team was a group of 10-year-old kids rolling through the toughest Rocket football teams in the area and looking forward to the promise of things to come.

Friday night, the Pioneers made good on that promise, winning an outright conference title with a hard-fought 13-7 win over a relentless South Christian team at Memorial Field.

The win was the 15th straight regular season win for East Grand Rapids. The team went 6-0 in conference for the second year in a row, completing back-to-back undefeated OK conference seasons to secure its second straight conference championship.

This one was anything but easy. The first half was a defensive struggle, with the Pioneers scoring their only touchdown on a second-quarter fourth-down pass from Mike Malewitz to Jack Billo.

In the second half, Malewitz put the Pioneers up 13-0 with a twisting, turning, ducking, diving 24-yard run, dragging a South Christian defender over the goal line.

The lead stayed at 13 until the Sailors scored a fourth-quarter touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Andrew Haan to Trey Vredevoogd with 3:47 left to make it 13-7 East. The touchdown was only the second one the first-team East defense allowed all year in conference play.

South Christian got the ball back with two minutes left in the game, but Jalen Broussard secured the victory when he intercepted a Haan pass and East was able to run out the clock.

Both the Pioneers and the Sailors will open the state playoffs next week.

Game Recap

Because of the slope of the natural grass field, the East Grand Rapids Pioneers were literally fighting an uphill battle in the second half of their state playoff game at Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood Wednesday afternoon.

Nevertheless, they persisted.

The Pioneers scored two goals in the second half and held on for a 2-0 victory over the Cranes in the first round of the state Division One playoffs. The Pioneers were seeded ninth in the 16-team tournament. The Cranes were eighth.

Grace Griemsman chose a good game to get her first goals of the season as she scored both East goals. Sophie Dozeman assisted on Griemsman’s first goal. The Pioneers also had shots on goal from Dozeman, Jessie Trube, and Sophie Forstner.

Emma Brinks made several key plays on defense and Suzy Deems made seven saves in the East goal to preserve the shutout. “Suzy made an amazing play to stop a breakaway for us,” said East Grand Rapids coach Ingrid Fournier. “I’m so proud of these girls I really don’t have words.”

Next up for the Pioneers is a game at top seeded Ann Arbor Huron in the state quarter finals Tuesday.
