Game Recap

Cedar Springs defeated East Grand Rapids 41-40 in a thrilling, back-and-forth district semifinal game at Memorial Field Friday night.

The Red Hawks were unstoppable on offense for most of the night, controlling play in a way no other team had been able to do against the Pioneers all year. Cedar Springs had leads of 14-0, 21-6 and 27-12 before East fought back to pull within five, 33-28, at halftime. The Pioneers scored on a nine-yard run by Connor Davis and touchdown throws from Mike Malewitz to Jack Billo, Nick Milanowski and Davis.

The Pioneers scored on their opening drive of the second half to go up 34-33 when Davis ran it in from eight yards out, but the Red Hawks came right back with a touchdown and two-point conversion to retake the lead 41-34.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers pulled to within a point of Cedar Springs when Ben Forstner made a diving catch of a Malewitz pass for a 25-yard touchdown. East tried to take the lead on a two-point conversion, but the pass fell incomplete.

“It wasn’t the way we wanted it to end,” East Grand Rapids coach Casey Longo said after the game, “but this was a great group of young men. I’m proud of them. They were a great group to coach.”

Longo added, “Cedar Springs is a very good team. They will be a tough out.”

For the game, Malewitz was 16 for 27 passing for 267 yards and four touchdowns. Davis rushed the ball 27 times for 172 yards and two touchdowns. And Forstner made five receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Griffen Caul had ten tackles and Forstner and Liam McCarthy had seven apiece.

Game Recap

There’s no such thing as a moral victory in sports. One team wins. One team loses. That’s it.

But if there were such a thing as a moral victory, the East Grand Rapids Pioneers experienced one in the quarterfinals of the state field hockey playoffs Tuesday night. Playing on the road, in 40-degree weather, in a driving rainstorm, against the top ranked team in the state, East battled Ann Arbor Huron almost entirely through a scoreless first half before Huron scored the game winning goal with 17 seconds left in the half.

“Our defense was on fire the first half and our offense had scoring opportunities as well,” East Grand Rapids coach Ingrid Fournier said after the game. “Our midfield played strong getting back on defense and feeding the ball consistantly to our offensive line.”

In the second half, Huron added two more goals to make the final margin 3-0. “While we lost 3-0 we played as a team and really supported one another,” Fournier added. “We certainly wanted a victory, but we left the field knowing we gave a hundred percent.”
