Meet Recap

In one of the more competitive matches of the season for EGR, the EGR JV tennis team was able to win all 9 matches. The EGR 1st, and 2nd doubles teams started off down in the 8 game pro set, and were able to fight hard and make two huge comebacks to win their matches 8-4, and 9-7. What was special about this match, was that all 18 doubles teams for EGR were able to play. 10 doubles through 18 doubles for EGR all had very good, competitive matches against the 1-9 doubles teams that Holt had. Most special, was the big win EGR’s 18th doubles team had against the Holt 9 doubles team, 8-4. The fact that the bottom 0 doubles teams were so competitive with Holt’s top 9 doubles teams, show how deep the roster for EGR is, and how much of a talented team they are.

Game Recap

East Grand Rapids battled two opponents Saturday at Mehney Field: the Academy of The Sacred Heart and the heat. The Pioneers defeated both, winning the game 4-0 and surviving temperatures on the field that approached the 105 degree mark that would have forced the game to be halted.

“Our motto today was to dig deep and beat the heat,” East Grand Rapids coach Ingrid Fournier said after the game. “Having a very strong bench worked in our favor today to combat the heat as we were able to cycle players in constantly. It was a solid team effort.”

The Pioneers opened the scoring on their fourth offensive corner of the first half. Jessie Trube converted a pass from Grace Griemsman to put East up 1-0. Trube scored again from Griemsman to send the Pioneers into the break with a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, Griemsman again passed to Trube, who completed the hat trick to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead. Audrey Pyper added the final Pioneer goal, off an assist from Trube, with just five seconds left in the game.

“Our defense played very well and held Sacred Heart to only five shots,” Fournier said. Fournier also pointed out that three of the four Pioneer goals were scored off corners.
