East Grand Rapids High School
Hartland High School
A night that began with a celebration ended in disappointment for East Grand Rapids as the Pioneers lost to Hartland 2-1 on Senior Night at Mehney Field.
“We started out strong with all nine seniors in the lineup,” East Grand Rapids coach Ingrid Fournier said after the game. The Pioneers opened the scoring on a first-half goal by Jessie Trube that was assisted by Marisa Mooney. It looked like East had extended the lead to 2-0 when Grace Griemsman deflected another Trube shot into the Hartland net, but the goal was disallowed.
In the second half, Hartland scored on a penalty stroke to tie the game and then scored the game-winning goal off of an offensive corner. “We had many scoring opportunities but we weren’t able to score,” Fournier said. “It was a tough loss in an evenly matched game.”
The loss in no way diminishes the contributions to the program made by East Grand Rapids seniors Maggie Benham, Suzy Deems, Sophie Dozeman, Marisa Mooney, Greta Staggs, Jessie Trube, Natalie VanderZyden, Corrah VanWingen, Zoe Zawacki,
The Pioneers have one game remaining, at Chelsea on Saturday, before beginning the state playoffs.
