East Grand Rapids upset top ranked Lowell 16-14 Friday night in the sold-out Pink Arrow Pride Game in Lowell. The win is the first for the Pioneers over the Red Arrows since 2010.
Connor Davis opened the scoring for East Grand Rapids with a two-yard touchdown run after Mike Malewitz had run the ball down near the Lowell goal line. The point after attempt was blocked.
The Pioneers extended the lead to 13-0 when Malewitz found Ben Forstner in the right flat for a 12-yard touchdown catch. Mark Boeve made the extra point.
Lowell narrowed the lead to 13-7 in the second quarter on a touchdown run by Ben Lobbezoo. That score didn’t change until the fourth quarter when David Kruse put Lowell ahead 14-13 with a three-yard touchdown run.
Jalen Broussard got the ball back for the Pioneers later in the fourth when he intercepted a pass and returned it deep into Lowell territory. From there, Mark Boeve put the Pioneers ahead 16-14 with a 19-yard field goal.
Marty Ward secured the victory for East Grand Rapids with his second interception of the game in the closing minutes. For the game, the Pioneers forced five turnovers: a fumble recovery, two interceptions by Ward, one by Broussard and one by Forstner.
With the win, the Pioneers move to 3-0 on the season.
