Game Recap

East Grand Rapids took an early lead, almost lost it in the second half, and pulled away late for a hard-fought 38-20 win over Forest Hills Northern Friday night at Memorial Field.

“Obviously, it’s a big win for us,” East Grand Rapids coach Casey Longo said after the game. “The kids played their butts off and we did some good things, but we also made some mistakes. We’ll learn from those and continue to get better.”

The Pioneers turned the ball over twice, on a fumble and an interception, and had a touchdown pass from Mike Malewitz to Ben Forstner called back because of a penalty.

In the second half, with the Huskies finding success through the air, the Pioneers turned to their ground game, rolling up big yardage and eating up the clock in the fourth quarter. For the game, East gained 242 yards to 155 for Northern.

The Pioneers got two touchdown runs from Malewitz, one rushing and one receiving touchdown from Connor Davis, and one rushing touchdown from Jack Billo. East also had a field goal from Mark Boeve. Will Hawkins caught two touchdown passes for Forest Hills Northern.

Next up for the Pioneers is the Pink Arrow game at Lowell next Friday.
